Funnily enough i just received an e mail through my hotmail account from someone called painter.724 offering to give me a backrest for the cost of postage,He stated that he had read my post on this forum,am i being overly cautious as I don't know how he could get a hold of my e-mail address,also why didn't he reply to me on this forum?
What do you guys think,is he genuine or not and has anyone heard of painter.724?

painter.724 has 40 posts on the forum here (click on "Members" at the top, right). I think you are safe.

And by clicking on your name, he has the option of sending you a PM or an email, which you provided in your User Control Panel. When a fellow user sends you a email through this system, though, they cannot see your email address.

Sorry for any offence painter but I'm not used to people being so nice when I've never actually met them,I admit I was taken aback when you offered me the backrest,I feel a bit embarrased now.

derek, you've just been touched by a strange phenomenon in this internet community place, and no doubt others too, where info and experience is freely shared. Even stuff of value passes hands. No need for embarrassment imo as it is an unusual feeling to unexpectedly receive such generosity. No doubt painter once felt that for the first time too.

My view is that we should perpetuate such things. It doesn't need to be here, but it might be with others you know.

The phrase (and film) "Pay it forward" springs to mind,still can't get used to the generosity of some people,I don't know why because i lived in the States for almost eight years,I lived in upstate NY and folks helped each other and you didn't need to know them that well,i guess I've slipped back into being bloody cynical Scot .

Over the years I have seen many very generous things happen from complete strangers. I could tell many stories about this from a personal standpoint.

Linda and I have a "new" foreign student that some of you may soon meet. I was brought up to think that I am obligated to give to others. It is an honor be able to help a worthy young person.

Just the other day on TV was a piece about a fast food place that people pay for the person behind them. So much so that 20 minutes can go by without anyone paying for themselves.

We just hired a young woman that I first met when she was a senior in high school. With my help she got a very high quality education in 1/2 private and 1/2 at Davis Cal with it paid fully. She never had to take a student loan. When needed, money just landed in her account at school. Few of her peers found jobs out of the university. However, she is so stellar of employee that the contract firm for which I work was happy to hire her. She is one of the very few female wireless workers. Other contract workers are stunned when she shows up to do the inspections. She gets a kick out of it.

I hear that Americans are generous compared to many cultures. We should be, as we have had it really good and need to give it back.
