She LOOKS pretty straight from here despite the things you describe. A coupla non-stock small things but nothing major to my eye. How does she run? I like Benchmark Works and Hucky for parts. '71 was the only year for those DOT-mandated reflectors on the turn signal housings, I think. Pretty hard to find the correct ones anymore.

Motobins sell Venhill cables cheaper than oem, but having used them, I think oem is better value in the long run.
I'd go aftermarket for the other things you've mentioned, but good throttle cables go a long way to easier tuning I think.

I will check out those other two venders (who I forgot about). And the bike starts right up but runs poorly. I think one of the ferrels on the throttle cable was not seated properly so it was way out of sync. And with that dumb exhaust you can't tell. However, I really like the looks of that dumb exhaust!

Yes, the bike looks very nice in this picture. But you can't see the silver paint on the wheels covering rusted spokes and rim. Or the black rattle can paint under the seat and on the turn signal stanchions. Headlight and tank surface rust, scratches and dents. They did a good job on preparing the bike for sale.

But I really like it. Except for the exhaust it is original. To start with, I need throttle cables. They are frayed. Any hints on where I can source 'other than' oem parts? I just bought some parts from Huckey's, I sent Hans a check and he sent the parts right back, pretty good service. note I put a set of /5 battery covers on LaDonna's /6, at her request, she likes the looks of them.

For BMW spares there is the local BMW dealer--for those few of us who actually live in range of a BMW dealer.

In Boise, Idaho one of the guys there speaks airhead. The dealer there stocks some rudimentary, often used parts like wheel bearings, carb diaphragms, valve cover gaskets, and such. The prices are list, but the good thing is that the dealer there can get the part in a week, and there are no shipping charges.

And once in Seattle I needed a set of steering head bearings. I was astonished that the dealer had them in stock. That bearing is unique, so there's no finding it at a bearing house. I bought two sets, one set to use, and one set to keep for when I will need them again.

As a side note, on the steering head bearings, if you call a bearing supplier and give him the bearing number in your maintenance manual, the supplier might find a bearing, but it costs something like two or three hundred dollars. I don't recall the details of the problem, but the bearing number I gave the dealer is the same in some way as a VERY large bearing for another purpose entirely.

Even in the posted picture I can see an awful lot of rust on everything that isn't chromed or painted, and that sidestand used to be painted once....

I bought a pretty big roll of fuel line from Hucky's. It rotted out on all the bikes I put it on. I like everything else he sells and he's fine to deal with. I just have switched to Gates Barricade fuel line in hopes it will last a long time.
