For most "electrical," I prefer a gun. For "electronics," a pencil iron is a necessity.

For electronics, your biggest concern is not getting things too hot and not letting the heat get somewhere it doesn't belong. For electrical, just about your only concern is getting it hot enough for a good joint.

I use a Weller gun"l". ;)

It has a light built in to illuminate my work area.

That's the kind I had. Dang thing only lasted something like 40 years! Actually, I'm pretty sure I'm a very light user of soldering guns and who knows, someone with more electrical savvy may be able to figger out what's wrong with it. I will say that the "trigger" is the most uncomfortable, un-ergonomically designed part of any tool I've ever used.

And if I had noticed Ken's typo of gunl, I'd have thought he was throwing us boat guys a code message. :) "I think I'll go scupper me gunnels, matey." Like that kind of thing, y'know?
