I started mine up at one stage yesterday. One of the lads said "wot's that noise"? I said "it's the engine"! Modern bikes sound like sewing machines most of the time.Ross wrote:After the rattle and roll of the boxer the brick is so smooth.

Re: Look What I Done
Some old K's REALLY sound like sewing machines. They have a whine that overpowers any other sound from the engine. I've only heard a few that do that. I think it might mean their timing chains are worn, but it might be some part in the alternator drive or something.SteveD wrote:I started mine up at one stage yesterday. Re: Look What I Done
Good going Grant on your new ride. Hope you enjoy the extra hp. It's nice to know it's there when you need it.
I bought my '93 K1100RS about three years ago now. Have known for years of earlier K bikes having a heat-on-the-driver problem. Here's a great near-fix for the issue. It's at a K11 bike message board.....

You'll find there quite a wealth of collective knowledge on these K11 bikes, as one can here about airheads.
Have put on around 20k miles on the K bike since buying it. One issue I had was a couple years ago...the fuel pump quit. The K11 message board said most likely I needed to just replace the electrical connection to the fuel tank; and was recommended to use a nice hefty trailer electrical connector such as this one. Hope you have a similar one down in Oz.
Buy both the male and female connector.....

I fixed mine this way and it's never been a problem since.
I should throw in the ABS on my bike works great. It got a good try-out the first month when I bought it when a idiot cage pulled out in front of me -- had to really hammer down on the brakes. Could really feel the ABS working. The bike stayed in a straight line during the extreme braking with the usual ABS clanky feeling.
There was one time the ABS brake light wouldn't go off. Seems the K11 message board told me a simple re-boot to do. That fixed it whatever it was.
Here's a place for some K bike parts.

Welcome back, Grant. I think most of us are "K-curious" at the least.
I'm glad you're back. How's about a few pictures of the Truck?

I do miss sitting on a boxer and having it shuffle around under me at the lights.SteveD wrote:I started mine up at one stage yesterday. One of the lads said "wot's that noise"? Gidday Fellas,
Randy: great heap of info there so thanks a lot for that... links have been saved for future reference mate.
Trying to read and find out as much as I can about these bikes, it will all start to sink in soon.
Ross: I haven't really ridden it to far yet, just up the street and back, I sold my bloody helmet so I have to go shopping again for a lid.
Chuey: Great to here from you again, I just wore out my last t-shirt that you sent over a few years back, they were excellent quality, must get a couple more one day, but this time the paying kind.

Re: Look What I Done
I was told that the "whine" came from the main drive gears that link the crankshaft on the LH side to the clutch carrier in the center of the bike.Major Softie wrote:Some old K's REALLY sound like sewing machines. Re: Look What I Done
Buddy of mine has the LT.
I have to tell you, big as it looks, he makes it dance through the curves.
Luckily, it looks like you already have the lowered seat- it's always nice to be able to flatfoot those tall K's at a stop.
