Yes, Duane will be here. But you have to speak carefully. Be sure not to say anything about countersteering! For some strange reason he's touchy when you suggest that counteering is a valuable concept for developing riding skills.

Ken
I don't need none of that sissy countersteering!

WiFi Recommendation?

Post by Ken in Oklahoma »

Does anybody have any thoughts about what WiFi (Router?) I should buy? The distance from my modem to Rally Central (AKA as the parachute over the concrete) is about 100 feet with most of my house and shop in the way.

I just went into the store and bought the first one I saw. Hook-up was a breeze. You just want to set up a password so not just anybody can jump on. You aren't MickyDees, after all.

My neighbor also has a "guest" account on his. It is also password protected. Since I have my own I don't really care.

My iPod was my first wireless device (that is when the nephews told me I "needed" a router...).
The Nexus tablet seems to be much more aggressive at finding a signal.
Anything in your house should cover your immediate area.

My biggest rationalization for all this gadgetry is I never had a 2nd PC to set up in the garage. Now I can take my tablet out there when I need to refer to online instructions on how to do something.

Ken, I'd avoid the Linksys stuff if you can. Netgear wireless routers are better quality, at least I've had better luck with them. When we were using a Linksys router we had intermittent internet connectivity problems, used to drive me mad. As Rob said, setup is easy and of course I would be happy to help with that.

I am looking forward to meeting you (and others) too Ken, thanks!
Uh, 'bout that rain. It does happen. But at least the temperature is usually managable, especially now since it appears that global warming is real. If worst comes to worse I can always fit you with some trash bags with slits cut in appropriate places and baling twine to take up the slack. Unfortunately there's no choice in colors. All I have is your basic black.
Some duct tape might be helpful too.

I think I might have to get some rain gear for the trip.

Speaking of global warming we could use a bit of it around here lately. It's been more wintry the last few weeks than it was the whole winter. Most ski areas closed last weekend as they usually do in the spring but now several are re-opening for the weekend due to so much snow in the mountains. No riding the GS lately like I was in January. Not since last weekend! :(

If someone has 100 ft of cat5 cable we could move the wireless closer to the parachute.

You know, there's another posibility for computing. The shop is lots closer to the cabin than "Rally Central". It's well lit. Plus there a nice woodworking desk to act as a desk and plenty of stools to sit on. There are drinks just outside the door, and company as well.

Hell, you might even have a ringside seet to watch Larry Fixit fixing.

That would be fun wouldn't it. I've never done it, have you? I consulted Google and it looks like it should be doable with the aid of some free streaming services. Might be advertising injected though.

It might seriously tax the DSL also. Ken would not be able to update us on the weather, world events, or Paris Hilton.
