I wonder what the purpose of that extension was?

They were used as mudguards. Guzzis and NSUs with leading link forks sometimes had them.
It was also an aerodynamic feature devoped in Guzzis wind tunnel in the early '50s.

I wish... :roll: Since there are fenders on that bike, I'm guessing it was for some sort of aerodynamic advantage... or maybe someone at BMW Design Studio liked dolphins?

I was thinking that thing looked less beaky and more tongue-ey. In other woids, it looks all too much like a stuck out tongue. Almost humorous. Now, if it is aero, what the heck?

The 'beak' on oilhead GSes does perform a function. It guides air into the oil cooler. The odd-looking 'cap' on top of the front fender on the R1150R did the same thing.

A few years ago I was buying some tires at the local BMW dealership. As I waited to have them mounted, I checked out the bikes in the showroom. One of the "650" type bikes had a high mounted muffler on each side. One was a blank. I would never knowingly buy a bike with a dummy muffler. It made me wonder about what is going on at BMW. It was not the model Sibbo is enthusing about.

I believe it was storage space designed with symmetry in mind.
