Dyna ignition booster

Post by painter.724 »

Lately I have been seeing a few Dyna ignition boosters for sale, and was curious if the collective riders on here use them or think they are unnecessary with a well tuned bike. I have a 60/6 which are known pingers and have read about a few fixes for that, but am wondering if the Dyna would make any improvement.Mine has never really pinged,or it is so slight that I cannot tell. Any thoughts? Thanks

Painter, are you talking about the electronic module for a Dyna III or something else? I'm not familiar with all the Dyna products that might pertain to airheads. If you're talking about the Dyna III electrical box, I have a theory.

Hi Ken, I am not sure if it is a Dyna 111 What I have read so far is that they work in conjunction with the coils to give [what they say] 70% more high energy storage at high rpm's and a more consistant spark

Typically, the only way to reduce the tendency to ping the 600cc bikes is to reduce the compression with say base gaskets or to use an electronic ignition system that has a controllable, ie delayed, advance curve. The Dyna III won't do it...it uses the stock advance. You need something like the Boyer system...maybe one the new fancy crank-mounted systems. An ignition booster won't do it because it just helps preserve points for a longer period of time...it's just a booster.

Greetings Kurt, My r60 has never really had the pinging problem. I might have just gotten lucky there.I was more inquiring about overall performance that the Dyna may bring to the table
Thanks Dave

Dyna booster? I hear it reduces pitting on the points and makes for a hotter spark. Doesn't sound like a bad deal.

Dyna III ignition system? Or any EI for that matter...it can help fine tune the ignition so that you get optimum performance on when each cylinder fires. Creates a smoother running engine. I suppose there are some minor performance increases, but I think it more about making it smoother and optimum.

The "booster" is a recommended component with some of their systems, but the booster itself should have zero impact on pinging. The only way spark can improve pinging is by changing when it happens, or, with dual-spark, changing where it happens in the combustion chamber.

It might well have the results Kurt in SA mentions, but nice as all that would be, it won't affect pinging.

Sounds like the OP doesn't have a (known) pinging issue, I guess he was wondering about other improvements.
