Hi,
As with every one here, my bike has a story for every mile...
Like the time I played monkey on the wrench then headed off on a 6k return trip, half way back in the middle of the Simpson Desert - Western Australia ... booting it along at the tonne she began to shake, rattle and not roll - the final drive disintegrated and locked solid ... I over tightened & stripped the fill & drain plugs, things get hot when the oil gets out. I have the crown & pinion (520k old) and had thoughts of making a candle stick holder welding them together using an upside down piston(480k old) on top
Ok, on to some current stuff.
I have the frame completely stripped down now. As you can see, the surface rust is minor but in some places it is very pitted, mainly the seat frame & fairing bracket. I intend to have the frame bead blasted & refinished... which begs the question I pose to you all... powder coat or paint ?
Same situation with the snowflake mags... they have been well and truly sandblasted by the miles, the original clear coat is all but gone. I intend to beadblast these also... a crazy voice in my head makes me continue to investigated p/c the mags too. Any one have experiences to share re: mag resto's?

Thems great pics Joe, especially liked the plan view. And Wollombi was a regular run for me once too.
Get that bike together and over the million km mark! I am sure BMW would send you a card or some lederhosen or knudel or something or other with an umlaut.
Anyways, you can write and sell an e-book about it and live off the profits.

Since nobody answered your question, here are my thoughts. I have a similarly crusty R65 with the snowflake mags. While some have powdercoated both the wheels and frames of their bikes, I have never been very impressed with the results. Runs, sags, threaded holes filled and the tendency for chips etc. have put me off. Some say the P/C makes the wheels a breeze to keep clean. Paint if done carefully and with good prep seems to be popular and I'm sure a lot cheaper. No need to remove the bearing stack either.
I've had excellent results with powder coat, but it's expensive. If you do pc then don't do a clear finish though, as it can lift off.
