So I guess the reason it's shown not connected is it has to do with whether the bike has a real headlight switch or not. For US-always-on condition, you'd want the light to be off while the starter was operating.
Interesting that the schematic I have doesn't mention this.
My '78 bike is a Euro bike and has a REAL switch so I didn't think of this! I turn the light ON after the bike is running.
The '71 was before the "always-on" requirement came about so the starting procedure is the same...
