G'day Joe, I just noticed the thread . I'm pretty close by ... outside Murwillumbah . If you needed any head work done i recommend Bob Garner in M'bah. A good guy who knows his stuff .... an ex racer and a Ducati guy.

Wow... cool She'llbe, thanks mate... mine are the 17mm ones... every $ saved on postage will be needed.

Thanks for that recommendation Sibbo. Michael did say he was happy to work with 'supplied parts', though he did say he can get the heads done in Balina.
Ive tried to call Bob a couple times with no answer.
BTW - I am in Piggabeen, 15min inland from Tweed Heads.

Ok so I got a phone call from Michael and he has the engine stripped & inspected... not all doom & gloom.
The rear main bearing was shot to the point of scoring on the crankshaft... so it is a case of find a crank grinder to resize the main's or replace the crank... bugga. The conrod faces on the crank are very clean & the rods are also in very good servicable condition.
All other bottom end internals are also in good nic.
The next lot of less than pleasent news is the need for a new universal joint in the driveshaft.

I can see my slim budget being swallowed very quickly.

Im off to ACT on family business this arvo. Will be gone for 2 weeks so no work will get done until my return.

Good s/hand crank is the preferred option rather than grinding.
U joint can be replaced with a hardy spicer unit.
I did my uni maybe 15 years ago, all good.

I don't think there's much question about that! (considering the starting point)

But affairs of the heart rarely come in under budget...

I see you're in pretty good hands with your local airheadsters pitching in with sound mechanical/engineering recommendations.

Heyas... well after several fabby weeks visiting my sister followed by a shabby week of food poisoning :oops: ...
Its time to keep the ball rolling... I did say I am slow (me109 - dont say it ! ;) )... but persistant :D

So with all the canundrum of 'grinding v's replacing' cranks, I hit the ebay's ... found many @ high klms & price. Then the Univerese dropped this one on my lap, listed only 1 hour prior to me seeing it, only 18,000 miles and a bargain price.

Ok... so what else have I done...
I have accumulated a rather huge shopping cart @ Motobins... so due to $$ flow it will end up being a multi delivery order starting with essential engine parts. I will send the heads & barrels away when my 1st delivery of parts arrives.

I got stuck into some heavy degrease & cleaning of 95% of frame, forks etc.. all steel & alloy items in preparation for bead blasting then painting / powder coating. It all looks heaps better already, but not worth a pic hehe

... started cleaning the engine block ...

Next thing I grabbed was the carbies, striped them down, clean & rebuild. I may need to track down a range of alternate size jets to make final tuning more accommodating.

After a complete pull down and inspection the only salvageable parts to my seat are the hinges :lol: .. the cowling & rack are ok. A new seat is in the shopping cart wish list...

Time to drag my grummbly guts out and do some more cleaning...

Excellent start Toga! It will be fun to watch it all come together.
What are your crank bearings like?

Hey Toga, neat bike and wonderful story!

I have never seen this mentioned in the hallowed halls of beemerdom, but over on the CBR250R forum, Plasti-Dip seems to be all the rage for coloring wheels. It is cheap and easy, and if you don't like it you can just peel it off.
It comes in a variety of colors and both spray cans and liquid.

I have not used the product myself, so I can't say much 1st hand about it, but there is no heating of the wheels involved.
Like anything, prep is very important - but from your pictures I don't think I am telling you anything new.

Ignore Jean - I just ran my R65 gearbox dry (still not sure of how it got that way). It destructed much like your final drive.

Many thanks for this interesting story, Toga!

As carer of a pair of airheads with 190 KMi between them, it could be interesting to hear how many gearbox rebuilds & pairs of exhaust valves (+valve guides) your RS has been treated to.

JOOTG, it got that way cause somebody (the CAT???) drained the oil out and forgot to put any more in.
DUH.

Cheers... I know someone that has a really nice Corbin seat for that bike..
I hear he is willing to ship to Australia : D
