Don't knock it until you've tried it...

Post by Deleted User 62 »

I've been chasing a noisy left hand cylinder for the past couple of months. Valve lash was perfect, zero rocker end play, good compression, but still one side was always a bit noisier than the other. I was starting to fear the worst; piston slap, worn guides, big end bearings etc. It's also had a bit of a seep in the head to cylinder gasket for awhile, and last week one of my push rod seals on that side developed a leak. I was marking my parking place Harley Davidson style when on the side stand... So, yesterday I tore into it and found the top studs almost completely sealed with two different colors of sealant, slimy chunks of black and a hard rubbery grey. I cleaned it all out, put it back together with new seals and gaskets, and the noise is gone! Now I really need to do the other side...

Tim, you would have seen this way back when it started if you had removed both valve covers and run the engine. You would see that one side was oiling less than the other.

We also ran them open to push against the rocker arm to see if it would quiet it down. Of course we didn't go up in rpm much. This is also a good time to use the stethoscope to diagnose noise.

Depending upon where one puts thumb pressure, the noise will change, sometimes a lot.
Ask the Indians what happens when you don't control immigration.

Yep, I've done the thumb pressure test, but what threw me off was all the oil that drained every time I removed the valve cover. I assumed if it was there that I was getting enough oil flow. You know how that goes...
