The Motus has Hydraulic lifters! No valve adjustments! No expensive and heavy shaft drive either!

I think the Japanese provide more practicality than the Europeans. Less cost, less maintenance, and better reliability.CVA-42 wrote:Motus had a display at the Barber Vintage Festival this past weekend so I got a chance to look one over. Very interesting bike but, practically speaking, I'm not sure why anyone would buy one over a new BMW. I guess practicality doesn't have much to do with it, though.
A chain drive small block v four with 125 ft/pds at 500pds should have some serious advantages.

I agree regarding Japanese vs Euro machines. I can also see the mechanical attractiveness of the Motus. By "practically speaking", I was thinking of living with a Motus every day, i.e., continuous and widespread parts availability, service, and things like that. If I were taking an extended tour through the southwest, for example, I would take a BMW over a Motus. But I am glad to see another brand on the market and I applaud the spirit behind it.Zombie Master wrote:I think the Japanese provide more practicality than the Europeans. And why don't more modern motorcycles have modern lifters? I understand why 12,000 RPM sportbikes need a bucket/shim, but why can't we have 20th century technology in standard and sport touring bikes?Zombie Master wrote:The Motus has Hydraulic lifters! Let's not even talk about variable valve timing.
I bet it's a conspiracy!

We need longer strokes, heavier flywheels, and grease fittings to get back to some practical utility....IMO

We seem to be entering a conversation about 'trouble free' push button motorcycling . I can see lots of reasons just to go the grease nipple and long stroke path, just to stay somewhat removed from the 21 st century smoothness and perfection.

Even in this millennium, while the huge majority of cars have hydraulic lifters, the highest performance vehicles do not.
Cars that are not tuned to get high performance from their engines still sell. Other than the cruiser market, motorcycles not designed to get high performance from their engines, don't sell.
Camrys sell. Camry type motorcycles don't.

The cruiser market is huge, I wonder if it's primarily a response to mechanical sophistication and uber performance ?Major Softie wrote:Even in this millennium, while the huge majority of cars have hydraulic lifters, the highest performance vehicles do not.
