R100R 1993

Post by Souljer »

Hi,

1993 R100R. I just got it about a month ago. Thanks to everyone here who helped me and put up with all my questions.
Two weeks ago I went for a ride through Palos Verde, Ca. There was a part of the mountain road that swings over a cliff facing the ocean. When you look over the cliff you see some land and then a blanket of clouds to the horizon.
It was amazing. I was supposed to be pointing but a friend snapped this shot before I got off the bike.

I have to admit I'm not wild about the styling. I'd much prefer a /7 tank and seat for example, but I've decided to just get familiar with how it rides and basic maintenance as it is before I start changing too much.
That said I was thinking of getting some crash bars in case I tip it over while practicing, etc.

Regarding this bike I have a few questions. Since this site is a huge list of experienced folks, seems like a good place to ask.
Some weird things about the body is that the plastic side panels and fairing are a true black. The tank and front fender are a dark green-ish black. Nowhere that I've noticed does it say "R100R". The only nomenclature seems to be the tank badges. Is that how these were sent out or has someone swapped parts?

Can someone tell me what kind of fairing this is or is it stock? I don't think so, but I don't know.

Here are the keys that came with it.
Is the key with the small BMW badge the same age as the bike (1993) or newer? Could I have that key blade removed and re-cut to a different lock?

Thanks for your time, suggestions and information.

fairing looks like the Parabellum Scout, I've had one on my K75 for years and like it, my windshield is 18in with that and a pair of GS hand guards and I'm set for most weather. your valve covers are off a early 70's bike and I think they look better than the later ones, IMHO a good looking bike you got there. :D

I think the R100R came with the peanut rocker covers as stock.
Non stock fairing there..richard t might have ided it. It's certainly not BMW.
iT SOUNDS LIKE THE SIDECOVERS WERE ADDED OR PAINTED LATER ON. tHE TANK AND GUARD ARE PROBABLY THE CORRECT COLOUR. iS THERE A CODE NUMBER UNDER THE SEAT? tHAT'LL BE THE ORIGINAL COLOUR CODE FOR THAT BIKE.oops sorry for the caps.
Cheers, Steve

It's a Parabellum fairing. Not as nice-looking as a factory "S" fairing, but an R100R wasn't intended to have a fairing at all (doesn't it have the rubber turn signal stalks from the GS bikes?). If it puts airflow where you want it, then it's a good deal. The bike's OE side covers were painted to match the tank and front fender, and had an "R100R" logo on them; sounds like yours have been replaced.

Very nice looking bike. I've always liked that series. I agree with you about the appearance of the /7 tank and seat but I doubt they would fit your bike. I'd leave them alone. My buddy has a 1992 R100R that he bought new. If I remember correctly, "R100R" appears in sort of a script style on his side panels. His bike is factory black with silver pinstriping. The tank and fenders have a sort of metallic look to the paint. Don't know about the side panels. The fairing does appear to be a Parabellum Scout. Parabellum is located fairly close to me in Dahlonega, Georgia. Check their website out to confirm if you have a Scout. They're fairly pricey. Can't say how old the folding key with the roundel is but it could easily be as old as the bike because I bought one and had it cut for my '82 R100 when I got it in 1993. They may still be available. Don't know about re-cutting the key blade but kind of doubt it. The valve covers look correct to me. On the R100R, BMW was going for a kind of retro look in some ways and that included the old style "peanut" valve covers from the factory. I believe the newer style "square" covers would fit but I like the old style on this bike myself.

Souljer, since you are new here, you may not have heard my rant on crash bars. Go to http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/crashbars/ and then make up your mind.

The Parabellum is made by Charlie Perethian and he was Craig Vetter's designer back in the day. It being a handle bar fairing, I would recommend against it if it were on one of the older twins. It may be that the newer bikes don't wobble with a handle bar fairing, I don't know. Otherwise Charlie makes a quality product. I have only seen him once in recent years, but he and Craig are still good friends. Charlie enters the high mileage contest put on by Craig and usually wins.

The folding key on the right is what came with my 1979 R65 (and other period airheads).
The folding key on the left came on later bikes.
They both work the same and can be interchanged.

For some reason I cannot insert your picture here...

And yeah - if you have anyone (including yourself) that likes you looking like you, and you enjoy solid foods after a major trauma, find yourself a good quality, VERY good fitting full face helmet.

LOL
Thanks guys. I appreciate the concern.
Until I get my full face helmet I'm not riding on freeways or at high speeds. I'm just practicing on back roads or around the local area.

It's a cheapie that I got so I could ride around (helmet law here).
I think I found the full-face I want, I just have to pay for it.

In the mean time I can ride with this. I added the army surplus goggles so it's extra big with them on the brim.
Hey man, I didn't make it. I'm just trying to ride.

Anyway,
So can I get that old key out of there and have a new key made for it?
I love the way it looks.
