Yes Steve, I have read & heard stories about powder coating flaking, lifting & pealing. That is why I decided to 2pac paint the lot, No powder coating here.
The same reason you mention of potential 'chips' from tyre change's is the reason for so many clear coats over the base colour on the mags (& frame, fork sliders etc)... ideally, at worst, a less than proficient tyre change will only chip the top 2 or 3 layers of clear coat... well, that is the general consensus from auto body paint & panel forums ive joined to learn the correct procedures.
I have never read of a correctly applied top clear coat of paint separating from the base coat of paint. The obvious exceptions are a very weathered & old clear coating that has cracked / pealed... or unsuitably matched primer/paint/clear combinations of products.
Thanks Airbear, even at this early stage of work I am getting comments like "you look like you just got layed 5 mins ago by that look on your face"... a comment from the landlords wife whilst I was watching paint dry.
Yep, I sure am looking forward to those 'sore face grins' not too far down the road.

Another quick story that many an Ozzie can relate to... (I cant come close to ME109's vid footage)...
It was '86 and I was returning from a Ducati Thunder Rally @ Condobalin out in central west NSW when a roo skittled the front tyre. I managed to avoid a low side face planting... only to be spat off the high side.
Picking up the pieces and repacking I found that the roundel on the rear seat cowling was gone & subsequently not to be found.
About a week later a friends boss was t-boned in his 735csi and it was totaled. I asked if I could have the roundel from his hood... less than a week later I had his 735 roundel on my RS where it has stayed until now... see previous pic.

Sounds like you've researched it to the nth degree Toga. I don't know why I was thinking powdercoat when you're clearly painting it yourself in your booth.
Cheers, Steve

Im pretty happy with the results of the latest round of painting, sanding, masking, painting & unmasking...
Ill give it all 2 days to harden then I will spray the clear top coats over everything you have seen so far.
Then that will be all the alloy done.
... then to make a start on the steel frame & pieces... about 30 all up,
... then fibreglass repairs, tank & cowling resto,
... then paint the body work,
... then begin assembly of completely restored rolling chasis,
... then rewire, then, then .....

I agree Chuey,
IMO a nice pair of gold shoes, necklace & ear rings adds a tasteful bit of style & bling to any dress colour & pattern.
... but you will have to wait a while longer before I can show & tell, Betsy desires her dress be kept top secret until her grand unveiling

I was thinking a 5 tone masked candy apple red through to deep black plum with reverse masked pin stripping all layed onto a black marble underlay... plus a custom cowling monogram & roundel
I never was very good with secrets
... but hey, I thought I posted I was going to spray bright red snowflakes, so will have to see what I come up with
