Nice R90S for sale

I like it. It's extremely nice but it's not pristine if you look closely. Not sure what the seller meant when he said it had "cloissone" emblems. /6 bikes had stick-on emblems and yet the emblems on this bike don't quite look stick-on. But they're not screw-on, either. I don't think it was a $20k R90S. The $14.9K bid may have been as much as he's likely to see, IMO.

I know what cloissone emblems are. I have one or two that I've turned into a badge for a jacket. They start with a round piece of metal, stamped into a bit of a dish, and then with the BMW logo press-embossed onto it. Then, like cloissone, the black, white, and blue areas look like they are painted on. They don't look fired though. The impact is elegant, or at least more elegant than what is available nowadays.

My guess is that those emblems might have been used for some of the /5 series bikes. And if the /6 series bikes didn't have them, that would make the badges another non-period addition to the R90S. (Tarting it up if you will)

Unfortunately I don't remember where I got my emblems. Probably it was in a buy of some used BMW parts. And I also have no idea where one might buy some now, or if they're still being produced.

Perhaps the right search terms might pop up some results.

"Cloisonné" badges are nice ceramic versions of the originals, but weren't original. They don't yellow and fade like the OE badges.

SJ BMW were selling heavier ceramic or cloisonne badges a while back. Might be worth looking there if anyone is after them.

I bought cloisonne badges from Hucky for my /6. They were $35ish each (just checked, now they're $50!) where the plastic ones are $13.75.

These may be parts shared with the nicer BMW automobiles, if they're still using the same diameter roundel.

Understood. I wasn't making any claims otherwise. Whatever the source of the "cloissone-like" roundels, it would appear that the R90S owner did some non-stock prettifying of his bike. And they might have come from somewhere other than BMW. The ones I have might have come from somewhere other than BMW.

I'm also familiar with the BMW roundels that are screwed on. They are quite nice and have a nice heft to them.

Well, that R90S has had some mods and has spent a lot of time in the weather. But I have to give period correct.

That was somebody's dream bike at the time. It kind of reminds me of some hot rod magazines I've seen where a dream car has been found, almost invariably in some farmer's outbuilding, and everything looks old. You kinda wonder how a heart throb custom that everybody wanted so badly back in the day, could somehow wind up like that.

Hmm, thinking about it, that happens to a lot of people too.

I'm also familiar with the BMW roundels that are screwed on. They are quite nice and have a nice heft to them.

One of the 1975 R90/6 I bought recently has glued on cloisonne emblems. Perhaps they were used on BMW cars of that period?
