OK, here's a picture of the bike. I just spend half the night troubleshooting an electrical problem. Bike was dead in the water this morning after running fine on Sunday. Fully charged battery with voltage at the ignition switch but volts dropped to zero at the ignition switch when the key was turned. Cleaned the starter solenoid terminal/contacts and presto!

The second photo was taken by my dad in Malibu in 1980. Shortly after this picture was taken he put a Hannigan (sp?) fairing on the bike which he got for free for allowing his bike to be used as a display for the fairing at a motorcycle show. It stayed mounted until last month. I have to say I like the look of the bike without the fairing but I had forgotten how windy naked bikes can be!

Thanks again for all the feedback. I'm feeling more and more like doing some restoration to the bike so I have a hunch I'll be back on to ask for advice or share photos.

Yes---keep and ride. Perhaps some eventual repair costs will "be more than the bike is worth". That's a dealer's way of rationalizing new bike sales. The Airhead Way: If the amortized cost of a fix is less than the costs of new bike payments over the lifespan of the repair, then the fix is worth doing. The practical limiting factors under this calculus become repair part availability, and the basic suitability of the working bike to meet the owner's "needs"/tastes. BMW does a better job than most with long parts support, but if you "need" ABS, or seat heaters, or on-the-fly suspension adjustability, or a headlight that turns with the bike, then you need a new bike. Fortunately for most dealers and farkle-makers, most buyers' "needs"/tastes can be changed by marketing hype.
