Heat damaged heads - repair or replace?
Re: Heat damaged heads - repair or replace?
Yes, those tubes are available from MaxBMW for about $17 each. I remember a discussion about fixing a leaky one many years ago on the old Boxerworks forum, but I can't remember what the fix was. Maybe Loctite makes something that will secure and fill the gaps? It's #4 on this diagram:

Re: Heat damaged heads - repair or replace?
Back in the day I remember replacing one of those tubes. It was leaking at one end and it was a pain to do. It was our first and only, so we might have used the worse method possible. Had it been a frequent issue, we probably would have learned how to do it.
I just reread this and I only wasted more of your time, sorry.

Hey Sam, MaxBMW fiche also calls the pushrod tubes "protection tubes". Take due care when ordering...bigfella wrote:Hi fellows, I have since found out that the tubes in the heads I referred to are actually called protection tubes in the bmw parts book. I'm going to order some this week if they are still available.
The pushrod tubes fit to the outer section of the jugs as you described, the protection tubes continue that path from the bottom face of the heads through the cooling fins to the rocker arms.
