Where to Obtain a 3/4 Seat?

Post by Nailhead »

I love the look of the RS, and have since high school. I consider that look in many ways perfect: the flush front indicators, the glass headlight cover with its mysterious lines, the rake of the 3/4 seat...that I don't have.

Where can I get a 3/4 seat? To my mind, this bike is incomplete without it. I suppose eBay will be mentioned, but that impies a months-long vigil at the computer, and while what has to be done has to be done, I'd like to see if there are other quicker ways to obtain one.

Since we're on the subject, what's the going rate? High, I would think.

Anyway, I really want a 3/4 seat-- it's the one thing this bike is missing, and it just doesn't look right without it.

alteteile2003 is S. Meyer's eBay handle.

You can buy it through eBay, or through the link in my other post. They speak very good English in their email correspondence. NBD.
It looks like their website is cheaper than their eBay store, depending on any differences in shipping.

Yes, they are one in the same. I find it's worth comparing the website prices with their eBay listings. Sometimes it's cheaper on eBay for items they sell a lot of or if they are trying to clear out old stock. They will combine shipping on multiple purchases, and gave me a prompt refund when one item was accidentally left out of a shipment. Either way, they are usually cheaper than MaxBMW.

My first impression when seeing that seat was "hmmm, nice". Then, when comparing it to the dual ducktail seat, as introduced with the R90S, my opinion matured into thinking of it as pure style-over-function, as opposed to the IMNSHO of the airheads, including the R100RS, as puristic FORM-FOLLOWS-FUNCTION. At least in the styling of the bodywork.

With the flat handlebars first introduced on the RS, the rider leans forward, and has less room to slide back and forth on the seat to make use of the seating area the 3/4 seat provides. Now I also find the rear view of the 3/4 seat to be too big and dominating. My taking is that the stylists may have thought that as well, and as an emergency re-styling exercise incorporated pillion grabhandles into the seat. Which pillion is going to use those handles?

Gidday

This original 3/4 came up on Oz Ebay a few weeks back, got it for just over 400 and it is in excellent condition, have looked at them often over the years and have seen them on there every now n then up to $1200.00, not sure if they sold or the sellers are just feeling the market..

My recollection of seeing bikes that had the OE version of the 3/4 seat, is that the embossed pattern on an OE seat's top side is somewhat more pronounced than either of the editions pictured above---more substantial "tucks and rolls", if that makes sense. Both of the pictured saddles are nice-looking and probably comfortable, but I don't think that either is OE, if that matters to you.

I think khittner1 is writing about the covers. Here's a pic of oem cover...right click, view image for the whole picture.

Grant, yours is leather isn't it, and the pattern isn't oem, but the one in the picture above yours looks oem. I have an original 76-77 seat with the original cover (it's all separated and packed away) so a pita to check it. Those covers are hard to come across, though it's easy enough to get a cover made to do the job.

Yours looks a treat Grant and the bike will be outstanding when you've got it sorted.

The 76-77 version in the silber colour had 2 other features. It wasn't clear coated like the rest of the bike. The decal on the seat was white and read 100RS.

There's the cafe racer place in the UK that sells the individual seat parts and whole seats. They sell these seats too.
