So the other day a couple of parcels arrived from the USA.

One contained a complete wiring loom from a 1978 r100 which is in very good condition , has excellent connectors and the wires are nice and bendable, unlike the brittle ones on this bike.
Next many photos will be taken and all the wiring ends on my bike will be labelled etc as I remove the old loom, then while I am at it the frame minus the wiring will get a clean up and I'll repaint any rough areas that I come across, but all looks good so far and then I will install the new loom.

The other parcel was from Duane and it contained two pairs of chrome fork tubes from his mancave collection!! the four tubes are in excellent condition with no pitting and very usable asap and if I was getting one set sent over I may as well get two for the bargain price that Duane sold them to me for, many thanks once again Duane for that!! and compared to getting my old pair on the bike re-chromed here in Oz I am way in front with this deal and now have three sets at my disposal.
These fork tubes are from Duane's old shop stock so he mentioned and I know he has more pairs available at very good prices so get onto him if you need any.. Well worth it!!

I will post up some photos over the weekend

With Duane's new forks parcel now sitting here on the bench, plus the gearbox and rear wheel now installed back onto the bike and looking a million bucks!! as of last night and after a lunch visit from SteveD yesterday who gave me a helping hand to put the final drive back on the bike, push sort a few things to do with the new wiring loom install soon, so today I set about and removed more of the front end to see what is needed in the way of parts before the new fork tubes can go back on.

I completely dismantled both forks and yes all rubbers and stoppers were perished and the tubes had a fair amount of brown crud in the lowers, so a complete overhaul will now be on the cards for this old girl...

Any special requirements for folk oils?, any tricks of the trade that I should know about before I order parts and take another step forward??

I use 7 weight fork oil and BMW hd springs. Forks work well. Fork gaiters are required....Who wants the lady with the skinny legs?

With all new bits and pieces in there, I'd be inclined to use good quality fork oil verses any generic stuff. I'm unsure what that means these day? Mine are probably due too!

Something 5-8w would be about right. The usual accepted practice is to mix 5W &10W to your wanted viscosity. Generally it's close enough, but fork "oils ain't (fork) oils" like we used to think of them. They can be quite different despite similar labelling, but really, unless we're into racing and want that edge, it probably doesn't matter too much.

BMW factory manual 1978-80. 250mls each leg at rebuild.

Any decent BMW dealership should have some 8wt (BMW brand) on their shelf. The Indianapolis dealer had one quart in the parts department when I went looking. I guess they don't sell a lot of it.

How was the condition of the packing of those tubes? I really tried to make it light weight and also strong enough to withstand the greater gravity of being down below.

Glad to see that you have the floating bushings, as you should have. One never knows what might get swapped out by a PO.
Ask the Indians what happens when you don't control immigration.
