I changed all the crush washers. The rear end must have been overfilled a little, as the level was fine. There was no migration from the shaft. It had 150 ml in it, which is what I put in it the day before the long ride.

I think West Texas dust is everybit as good as baby powder for revealing leaks and a little bit of oil goes a long ways on that palet. So - maybe next winter I will do something to seal things up a little, but its riding weather now.

I was glad to see Duane's comment. I was thinking that a sure fix for those leaks would be S100. It's a cleaner that you can buy at motorcycle shops. It's from the Fatherland and it really works. Most of the leaks look like weeps.

Duane Ausherman wrote:I don't understand the concern, or question. I would clean it up and ride it 100 miles to see what may be actually leaking. You may have some oil transfer to the FD, but that is the only thing that could be a problem in the future.

Yes, it is possible to make it not leak. You will be very busy with constant disassembly and sealing up stuff. Ride it and be happy. you made it back.
Duane is right, but that does not stop me from keeping my slash five oil tight. I think the BMW is an easy bike to keep oil tight.

I am working on a 1952 Velocette right now and it leaks oil when I look at it. We don't even have to fire it up.

That said, I do have to periodically tackle a new leak. My transmission input shaft is leaking....and on my list of repairs. Other than that, I am oil tight.

If you decide to make it oil tight....don't get frustrated if you don't find the source the first time.
