Yeah, I've seen that guy too. That gives the greatest isolation, but I don't know about the quality of the buds he's using, or if you can make them with his kit and your own buds.

You can get ear buds that limit the sound level to (I think) 82 dba so that no matter how high you turn the volumn(to cover wind/etc. noise) 82 ia all that gets through.

No, we don't, and that makes no sense.

Cancellation is unnecessary if there is enough isolation - and if the buds are incorporated into the isolation system so that they are not being attenuated by the isolation system.

Isolation is unnecessary with cancellation, but, again, the buds/speakers need to be incorporated into the cancellation system or the cancellation will cancel the desired sounds.

Not only do we not need both, it is senseless to have both.

You'll still want isolation in either case.

I've been very pleased with the Etymotic ER6i. Really good isolation, and different tips are available for the right fit (which was a real challenge for me, as I seem to have very narrow ear canals). They are also small enough that they didn't cause any problems under my helmet.

Are you confused about how noise cancellation works? Cancelled noise has no "SPL." Noise you are isolated from is not being cancelled. Noise cancellation can work in a bud, in a headphone, in helmet speakers, in a car, in a room, etc. Isolation is only required for failings in the cancellation system. If it really works right, it is all you need.
