Sounds like the "choke" on that side is not shutting off.
Check that when you move the lever that the wound-wire sleeve is not coming out of the control housing, AND check that the choke lever on the carb is really being returned to the correct position. It's easy to not get that right.

i checked the choke and it seems to be ok. I took it for another spin and adjusted the carb and now it seems to run ok except that the idle drops really low and the battery light tends to come on. If i give it some gas it seems to regulate itself and idle fine but after some hard acceleration the idle once again dips low. The battery is new and I have been charging it. Could it be the voltage regulator or the alternator itself that is causing the bike to idle really low. As if its losing charge.

The battery light (GEN) should come on at idle.
Take it for a decent 20-30 mile ride and have a crack at adjusting the mixture screws, then set idle again.

Steve's right. Setting idle before engine is warmed-up is no good.
However, a 10 minute ride ought to be enough.
Idle should be between 800-900 rpm, not that the tach on the /5 is all that great.
But having the idle go down after the engine warms-up is indicative that it was set BEFORE the engine was sufficiently warm. Be sure the SP gap is correct too! It is really hard to get a good idle if the gap is much over 0.027 inches. Mine likes a tight 0.026 inch gap.
Charge light may not go out until you hit around 1800 rpm, but should be ON at idle.
However, a 10 minute ride ought to be enough.

I thought the rpm rose too high when warm if the idle was set when the engine was too cold, and that a lower idle might be a sign of a too rich mixture?

I thought that too, but it might have had to do with my chokes NOT being totally shut off.
It is hard to get the wires really tight until you get some experience with fastening them. If they bend, you actually have the choke lever a bit OFF the dead-off position.
Could not find my 20 year-old notes on that problem.
The main thing is: BE SURE you have a warmed-up engine BEFORE setting the idle...AND...BE SURE your chokes are totally OFF.
