All good thanks man i sent the original out to get repaired for $150 seemed to be the cheapest option

One fiddy's ok for a good job.
$50 bucks for one from Melbourne. Postage would be 50 bucks maybe? I dunno.

To me that's what a normal ring gear looks like. Can't flip it over becasue one side is beveled to allow meshing with the bendix.
Another, much easier approach: Dis-assemble, inspect, clean and re-lube the starter motor. On older BMWs the original starter grease solidifies, keeping the starter from turning as freely and operating as it should. If you'll take the time to use some really nice synthetic grease you won't ever need to do this job again. The starter will also spin up faster than it ever has before.
Old grease is a major reason starters go bad too, so you'll also be saving yourself (what ?) $400 ?
