On a serious note, when I checked my most recent purchase, an '86 mono, I found the gap too big (according to Anton's advice) and ended up ditching the gasket and adding a shim. Mind you as the bike had already covered over 40,000 miles without incident there was every likelihood that there wasn't going to be a problem...
