Attempts to limit the scope of the term "cafe motorcycle" to it's origins
( "old stripped down Brit Bikes that could barely do 100-mph" )
patently ignores almost sixty years of subsequent stylistic evolution and development.
In fact, virtually every MC marque climbed aboard the "cafe" bandwagon five decades ago,
even Harley Davidson ...
A trend which now culminates in the popularity of the factory produced "repli-racer".
Custom MC builders, too, continue to pursue "cafe" style, updated to contemporary standards,
using the "street-fighter" moniker to distinguish their personal brand of stylistic evolution.

For those of you who may have grown too old and too fat to "assume the position" –
Recall that flat bars and 1/4 fairings exist as substantial evidence
of BMW's involvement with "Cafe" style ...
Journalists of the times often referred to the R90S as "The first production cafe",
and BMW's own ad copy confirms the focused intent:

"The BMW R90S is, without doubt, the most exciting machine that BMW has ever produced.
It has more power, more torque, more shear performance. It is truly the flagship of the line.
And it reveals its status on first glance with it's race styling and special custom paint job."


No doubt that "popularity" of a style (in this case, "Retro-Cafe") will influence market prices,
and that some unscrupulous persons may take advantage of that popularity unjustly
as an advertising gimmick ...
It's the 'Merican way !

If the R90S is a factory cafe bike, then what's my R65LS? The 1980s are still hard to explain.

That's because they switched from psychedelics to cocaine in the eighties.

OK, maybe psychedelics didn't make an era easier to explain, but at least the explanations were interesting.
