There is a koi called Roy living in my pool, he's been there since 2007 and he's nearly 18" long. He was 2" long when he/she came to live with me.
We have a serious problem with carp in Australia. Many of the rivers in my area have carp in them. F'en big ones too.
In some of the lakes around here, they can be up to a metre long!
I have thought about harvesting the dirty stinking things and keeping them in a very clean water environment and feed them a different diet to perhaps purge any shitty taste?? $$ ??

Regards your recipe Tim, it would make an R100RS seat taste exquisite too.

Wait a minute....my teeny-weeny algae eatin' goldfish were not put on my dinner table

They were the "bait" for the bloody great herons and cormorrants that soon discovered a new feedsite ....my frikin' pond.

Don't mind the herons as they were "dainty" feeders but the bloody cormorrants were just glutunous pigs and had no respect for the nice green grass that led down to the swimmin' hole....they shit everywhere.

Well, in the natural chain of events, they soon became a morning ritual at 6-6:60 am every morning as I popped the beggers off, one by one, with my trusty 50 year old pellet rifle. They wiped out the goldies pretty quick one summer. Only ones that survived were a few lucky ones that parked themselves in the bullrushes and under the old sunken rowboat...they made it to at least 6" over the next few seasons but alas, the herons came and the poor old goldies left didn't know what hit them. Miss the old pond. It was "natural".

Absolutely nothing is done to treat the water other than to circulate it with a low power pump.

Not many people can grasp the concept.
When I tell some people they are completely chemical free, they say "Oh, it's salt then is it?"

I have also experienced goldfish breeding like rabbits, and growing quite large!
This is really intriquing what you're doing. We have a friends who both converted from "chemiclly enriched" pools to "salt water" pool system but too me, its still, "chemically enriched" (clorine/bromine or salt) vs "natural".

Jeff, so there is no external filtering system, just the circulation that keeps pool balanced or clean then. This is much like my old pond then...I had a slow spring feeding the ponding with outflow (or overflow) at other end. In other words, the water woould be constanly turning over I guess to keep fresh. In the heat of the summer sometimes the "flow" slowed to a tricle or even stopped as the spring dried up for a while that was the only time we then had possibility of algae bloom but was no big deal.

I guess with water in one of your "natural" pools, there would be enough aeration etc to keep the water stable?

Are these "natural" pools large compared to say average 16x32 pool or can they be any size you want to make them? Does size then matter at all? My old pond was big...about 1/2 acre and about 14' deep in middle.

I was always fascinated by the old pond and how it remained so stable.

Your pools look fantastic in terms of a desinger's eye and the fact that there "natual" is truly incredible. This should be the new way of doing pools!

There are many design possibilities for this type of pool, they just need to have a few basic things in common.
There are a few measures of acceptance too...... A person will probably be quite satisfied with their somewhat green pool...... Because they built it.
On the other hand, it is ideal to build a pool with incredibly clear water, that is drinkable!

My designs so far have incorporated two separate pools, one for swimming and one for bio-filtration.
My home pool has 15 tons of gravel in the bio filter pool where the pools pictured here both have about 8 tons.
The gravel is used solely to provide surface area for bacteria to grow on.
The bacteria are essentially denitrifying bacteria, harmless to humans.

I have also designed a fine filter which catches dust, leaves, algae, etc using a Geofabric.
Very simple and very effective.
The fine filter removes any junk from the water before it flows to the bottom of the gravel bed.
The filter panels get cleaned with a pressure washer about fortnightly.

My pools are a closed loop system with no run off water entering the system.
Water from a tank, or town supply is only used to replace water lost to evaporation.

Using a waterproof membrane such as Firestone, means I can build a pool as big as anyone wants.

Incredible. Such a simple concept with the gravel beds...just makes so much sense! great work Jeff.

We have friends who are looking at putting in a "dug" pond on their rural property. I told them what you're doing in Ozland and they were very intriqued with the idea of a "natural" pool such as what you design. Jeff, know of anybody doing the kind of "natural" pools as you're doing in Canada? I'll suggest they google "natual" pools and see what they come up with...

Thanks man, I'll send you a link (check your pm) to my website which contains a couple of videos showing construction and the finished? product of my pool at home.

It is indeed a simple concept.

I gave birth to my third pool yesterday by turning the pump on.

The last two pools I've built have been powered by solar power only, as there is no mains power connection available.
Talk about green pools. :?

Jeff -
A black vehicle with four large men in dark suits will be visiting you.
They represent the electric company.
They want to have a word with you.
