1975 R60/6 Us to Euro Handlebar Conversion, Control Cable Replacement Neccessary?

Post by bk1977 »

Hello,

I have a 1975 R60/6 with the BMW stock "US Version" raised handlebars.

I am hoping to switch the bars out for the BMW stock "European 660mm Low Handlebars". Does anyone out there know if changing to the European style low bars will require switching to the BMW "short" version of the control cables for the:

-Clutch
-Throttle (to stock slide Bing 26mm Carbs)
-Front BMW stock drum brake
-Rear BMW stock drum brake

Or will the existing cables accurately fit with the lower European style bars?

I want to make sure I have all the correct parts before moving forward with the conversion, and any advice is appreciated.

Many Thanks!

I want to go the other way, higher bars, maybe even scramble bars on my 90/6.. But i think the electric cables are to short.

The cables will probably fit and work but you'll find yourself having to cope with a couple of inches extra length which will probably result in loops of cable flapping in the wind somewhere out front of the bike. It would be be better to get correct length cables.

bk, i put the low bars on my '81 r65. it really changed the look and definetly gives it more of a sport bike feel. i did a low dollar cafe convert. single seat, short pipes, chopped fenders, small lights turns, led brake light, led licence frame.
to answer your question, the cables all work great. no flapping in the wind ; ) . they don't look out of place at all. the brake hose coming off the master cylinder is doubled up i would like to replace it, and a shorter bowden cable would tidy the cables up a bit. clutch cable functions great as does the front brake switch wire. you will feel a little closer to the road. i really like the change. i'm glad i did it.
i'm afraid i will have to look to the UK for the parts though. i could not find them at Capital Cycle or Max.
