Pipe under fueltank drains my tank.

What is the pipe under the fueltank for? It is putting my fuel on the ground. Is it some kind of breather? Is this a known problem?

There should be a crossover (rubber gas line) that connects both sides of the gas tank.
Looks like some pipes and vents were deleted, no idea why.

Its a ‘89 R100RT. And it is a single petcock.

That's a new one on me... doesn't look like any BMW tank I've ever seen. I always thought that all of the 'long stroke' road bikes had two fuel cocks. I can't find any reference in Clymer or Haynes to tanks with a single fuel outlet... even the 'California' spec bikes which have the fuel evaporation control kit appear to have two. What territory do you come from? Do you know the history of the bike?

There was a very small number of non metal tanks on monolevers in the late '80's. I've only ever seen one. I can't remember if it was a single petcock or not, but looking at those castings/moulds I'm wondering if it's one of those?

On my /7, that outlet connects to an internal pipe which opens up in the well around the tank filler neck. It's there to drain the water from around the filler when it rains. Do all these tanks have something like that? Could this tank's internal pipe have a crack in it?

I think this sounds very plausible! I was considering a quick-fix by just blocking it. But if it is do drain rainwater, it’s best to fix it properly. My bike lives outdoor.

I’ve had it for three years. I’ve also been puzzled that there doesn’t appear to be any connection between the two half’s.

You were precicely right Kurt! The drainpipe had a hole in it.

In fact you were both right! I was sure it was steel! It felt like it and sounded like it, but now I opened the fixing for the drain, I see it is in fact some form of plastic.
