Fixing a Bent /5 Clutch & Brake Lever Perch

Post by mschmitz57 »

Hi.

New member here. Name is Mark and I live 40 miles west of Chicago.

I'm restoring a '74 R90/6. As you probably know, the early R90/6 used /5 style lever perches. I removed the clutch and throttle perch and right away I noticed the P.O. had lost the little wedges from both perches. So now the handlebar clamp bosses are squished tightly together. I'd like to restore the original gap on these perches but I don't want to crack them. I was thinking about annealing them before trying to open up the gap but I'm not sure it's necessary. I'd like to replace the wedges but there's no way the wedge will fit inside the clamp and fit on the bar without a lot of prying.

I'm hoping someone else has had some experience straightening these out without ruining them.

Thanks,
Mark Schmitz

They're not as brittle as you think.
Gently widen the gap just a smidgeon by gently tapping in a wide flat screwdriver.

They just opened up when I replaced my perch wedges. No problem.
