Bmw r65ls carburetors

Post by Charlespvdw »

Hi all

I have been on a goose chace for the last 2 years trying to figure out what should be a simple fix on this air head but cannot seem to find a solution.

I did a nut and bolt restoration on an 1983 R65LS, which ran perfectly before by the way.

After the rebuild I could not get the timing right, which eventually got a bit better after realizing the bean can was sitting too tight after the respray and could not adjust in small enough degrees.

Then I struggled with the carbs, which I a still could not figure out.

I rebuilt them with all new internals and one new carb itself from Cytech. Followed the boxer2valve youtube video for the adjustment on the butterflys and floats.

I recently adjusted the needles to the same lengths. Adjusted the AF to half a turn out.

Now when I start it, the right side piston fires up and the left side spatters but never really comes to life.

I need advice please?

Even if it means rebuilding the carbs again with someone else's experience.. I am open to suggestions.

To be sure that you are in fact actually experiencing a carburetor problem, switch the carbs over to the opposite cylinders and see if the problem (spatter???) follows.
You don't have to hook up cables, gas hoses, airbox tubes, etc, for this test.
Just be sure there enough gas in both float bowls and activate the throttles by their levers.

I feel your pain, though a simple looking device, problem solving can be an absolute bore until one day you find that little thing you have overlooked. Most recently for me a broken clip on the air box caused a vacuum leak giving rise to me also owning a spare but not new carb, spare jets ultrasonic cleaning tank etc . So check all your clips a good and tight. Then swap everything over one piece at a time until you find it, I had to replace the right main jet once, swapped the jets left to right .
