small end bush replacement... how tricky...?

Post by nhoj »

happy new year to all.
so how tricky is it to replace the small end bushes in the connecting rods?
i didn't even find the procedure listed in my manual.
in my triumph manual, a draw bolt method is outlined, using the new bush, to push out the old.

or...
should i just let a machine shop handle this?
thanks all, nhoj

Let the machine shop do it because after the bushes are in, they have to be honed to fit your wrist pins. The machine shop can do it so that the pins are parallel to the big end centerline.

I have done many of them. It requires a special tool to hold the rod and do the reaming square with the crank. There are several pitfalls to this. I wouldn't trust the average machine shop.

Since I don't have that special tool any longer, I would only trust one place. That man is Joe Groeger. There may be others, but I don't know them.

By the way, with the bushing removed, check the rod, as they are always out of round. Do not for a second trust the method done by some of shoving a ball through the finished bushing for sizing.
