How do you work your airhead?

Post by Zombie Master »

It's been a cool wet spring here on the West Coast of of British Columbia. But today was glorious so I met up with some riders for lunch. The old R100 seemed very lively today as I threaded the curves together. I don't look at the tach much, but today I watched my tachometer to see how I was using the engine. At a medium pace she seemed happy working between 2750 and 6000. Is this where you run?

I'm not sure the number of the redline but when I'm going up Palomar, I'm near it a significant portion of the time. When I'm on the freeway, I don't over-rev the engine but keep it in a gear where I can accelerate on a moment's notice. I never want the engine in loafing mode because if you need the juice, it's not there.

I'm generally @ 4K, though honestly I go by ear/feel more than tach.
Now on the Kaiser(/7) I'm from 2500-7000, according to the bouncing needle; gotta get that fixed.

4 - 6 grand, usually. Much below 4 and I would be lugging the R65, unless I was on a gradual downhill or putting in town.

Softie had a GT1000 go weird on him. The ducks have always had slower stable steering.

From standing, I tend to accelerate to at least 4Krpm, but usually 5K, and continue to do so until at the required speed, where I'll just select the gear that allows a response at the throttle that doen't take too long. I find that's important when commuting, but much less so touring. Going thru the Snowies, or up Mt. Hotham, the bike would rarely drop below 4K staying mostly between 5K and redline. The grin factor improves at the expense of mpg.

From 0 to 7500. Whatever is required.
I like Chuey's race ready approach to riding.
