Removal of Starter motor

Post by boxertwinjeff »

Ok, I'm not that mechanically minded yet but I'm trying. Just had a Dyna 111 fitted and H4 Headlight upgrade + a new battery. The bike fired up first hit this morning as I would now expect,.. then on restarting five minutes later all I hear is a faint single click. Any ideas on what it could be? Starter motor or Alternator? Is removal of the S.M.
pretty straight forward if I need to? Cheers Jeff.
PS: with the extra Compression the engine now has, could this have anything to do with it?

Removal of the starter motor is quite straight forward except for the bmw engineer brain fart that requires the front engine cover to be removed to gain access to the one 'little pissy' nut that otherwise prevents the starter being lifted out of the engine.

Extra compression could strain a poor battery..... but yours is new.

I don't think your starter needs to come out.

Power to the starter is more likely the problem.

Sounds like your front cover will need to come off anyway to check connections.

'Course the new battery might be flat/faulty as well.....

Charge the battery and call me in the morning :ugeek:

Try and jump start from a car etc to confirm sufficient power.

Check diode board to starter motor connections,
Check ground connections,

You'll find it tomorrow I'm tipping Jeff.

Hey ME 109, Stripped down everything to get at Starter & cleaned connections, no go.
The single click noise is coming from the SMALL SILVER BOX mounted on the left side of centre frame
member. It has SR9570 12V stamped on it, is this the Voltage Regulator? could this need replacing? Jeff.

That's the starter relay Jeff, not sure if the click guarantees that it is ok...........prolly is.

I'm thinking of the clutch safety switch.......

With the starter button depressed, see if moving the clutch lever in and out does anything.

Not sure if there may be any involvement with the neutral switch on the gearbox.

This area is where Rob Frankham is a wiz.

G'day Jeff

That silver box would be the starter relay, it's job is to power the starter motor, it won't power the starter if your motor is already running.

Assuming all above is ok your problem could be in the solenoid or the armature of the starter motor.
Of course all connections need to be good, I hope that you get it sorted easily.

Cheers Bob.

If I take the starter relay in to an auto electrician can he test it?, that starter motor is a p...k
to remove, the 2 left side bolts are vitually inexcessable!.. with my spanners anyway, might
unbolt the Solinoid and take that in for testing too.

Er, from my experience Jeff, does any smoke come from the starter if the start button is held in?................ :?

My starter did not work at one time, no click no nuttin. Just smoke if I held the button in.
Turned out to be one of the field coils shorting on the armature.
