Running without the $2000 0-ring

Despite owning my R100/7 for 19 years I am late to the folk lore of the $2000 o-ring.
Just happen to read up on it the other day. http://www.largiader.com/tech/filters/canister.html
So I had my vernier calipers ready while changing my filter today.
Took the cover off and this is what I saw-

No shim, no o-ring! HTF did I do that!! Hmmmmm when did I even change that last ..... hangover ? dementia
... actually I don't ever recall using a shim, ever, but I always did use the o-ring.
So I have covered a few thousand kms at least with no shim and no o-ring, it seems without problem (?) Oil pressure light goes out when the bike starts. Engine with a bzillion kms is quiet as it ever was.
How?
Could it really be ...
