I did a full oil filter and oil change today. I used 25w60 instead of 20w60 as we are coming into summer and I not longer have the oil cooler fitted to the engine.
Just took the bike for a run. I noticed that the clatter from the heads is way louder.
At idle the oil light is flickering almost in time with the idle speed.
This to me is not a good thing to have happening. Never seen the oil light stay on for more than a few seconds at start up.
Could it be the grade of oil I am using is too thick? I have done nothing out of the normal with this oil change than change the grade of oil I use.

Re: Flickering oil light...
You have only gone up to 25 w from 20w. That is not that big a difference. I am much more worried that you got the oil filter correctly installed. I asume you have the correct filter since you no longer have the cooler.

Re: Flickering oil light...
The engine number for the R80 parts I am using is 82414815 then this is stamped below the engine number on the left lower side of the casing under the left cylinder. 802VBGarnet wrote:What year is your engine?

I am assuming the 82 at the start means that the engine was made in 1982?

Re: Flickering oil light...
82414815. Unusual number. Using the last 7 letters as the vin to check at http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?kind=M&arch=0 it says your riding a 1988 730i sedan! Ross, you need to ensure the vin is correct.
Yours is a monolever isn't it? They started in 1985?
I think you need to go back one step.
Redo the oil/oil filter, taking extra notice of the o-ring etc...did you check that little ball valve way in there? Not saying it's the problem, just "did you check it" given the opportunity?

Mine is a 94 R100RT mono badged as a LT. It has a 82 R80 engine with my R100 barrels and heads fitted. This was due to the pulled engine stud not being able to be fixed.SteveD wrote:Yours is a monolever isn't it? They started in 1985?

I did check the ball and it had good resistance when I prodded it with a stiff bit of wire.
I will check the oil ring again. I am sure it went in correctly but will check it again.

Oh yeah...I remember now. What's the vin number pressed into the case at the dipstick?

Re: Flickering oil light...
Hang on the only thing I did different was put a paper gasket between the engine block and the oil filter cover. It didn't have one when I took that cover off this morning to get the filter out.
