Their system is worth more than my bike.

I was thinking more along the lines of someone bodging fuel injection onto an airhead using cheap second hand parts, eg from a BMW oilhead or the likes of a Ducati.
A friend and fellow bike builder pointed me to this thread. All interesting stuff and pretty informative.

I'm in the process of building a system using the R1150 FI system on an airhead. Still collecting the parts from, you guessed it, ebay :-)

I already readout the chip and verified all the fuel and ignition tables on my R1150. It's a pretty tiny little (chip) file compared to a bmw car of the same vintage so tuning will be pretty straight forward. It uses all the same Bosch style maps as the cars, so it's familiar ground. I suppose a different system could be adapted as well, but I'm working with the 1150 setup. In my experience, you can't find a better engine management system than OE parts. The Silent Hektic system offers tune-ability with a GUI that most skilled techs can work with and that's why it's worth what their asking. It's turn key, just about. But if you can make your way around the software tuning side of things, the SH system is more than you need.

And WHY is it that you REALLY WANT to do this?

Sometimes it's "because I can." Sometimes it's to have something figured out yourself that no one else has. Sometimes it's all about solving the puzzle.

I think in most cases, Jean, there are other bikes in the garage to ride.

Dredging up this old thread..... Did anything come of this?
I'm 80% convinced to fuel inject my next project, with a microsquirt ecu.

I e-mailed Silent Hektik many months ago and asked them about the cost of the kit. If I recall, it was about $3,000. So, some time after that, I e-mailed again to arrange payment. This time, they refused to sell it to me. I suspect that they're just wanting to sell to racers with a full stable of mechanics behind them. This is even though I've fitted a Megasquirt to my Miata and did all of the tuning myself.

If anyone has better luck at giving them money than I did, I'd really be interested in hearing about it.

BTW, my main interest in the system was for smooth start-up and warm-up. And I would assume that gas mileage would be a bit better, too.

Back in the day people used to fit 40mm Bings to oil head GSs, usually done by travellers who wanted the simplicity of carbs.

Looking at some RTW travellers tales, the main failure that people seem to have is fuel pump problems, when the filters get blocked, as I understand it on the 800 BMWs, the fuel filter is intregal to the pump and are only supplied as a single unit!

That's progress for you.
