Pressing out neck stem

Post by sprints@pldi.net »

I have a r75/5, has anyone ever pressed the neck stem out of the lower triple clamp?

Yes, it can be done. Heat the alloy triple clamp to avoid removing metal in the process and make a note where the lock hole is positioned.

I pressed my 81 stem out recently, without heat, but I was going to make an inverted lower top clamp. It pressed out relatively easy. Just support the underside of the clamp with a close fitting steel tube that will take all the load as you press the stem out.

I personally know of two really good BM mechanics that use this method. Just have to make sure that everything is aligned properly before pressing it out.
