Throttle feel

Here is what the original parts look like.

I wonder why they wore so much.

What's the proper lubricant for this assembly?

I used waterproof grease, and packed it pretty well. I guess it didn't work

I'm going to order new parts.

They don't look that bad to me.

I've carefully maintained mine since 6000 miles from new and they still wear due to being made of soft pot metal.

I've seen far worse than that!

Check the throttle tube end play when it's located in the housing with the cap in place.
If you can slide the throttle tube back and forth along the bar more than say 1/32" the gears are losing engagement and will wear at an accelerated rate.
If the housing is worn, this will account for excessive end play of the throttle tube.

The wear on your parts shows that the gear teeth are not fully engaging.

Thanx for that! Something may have be misaligned somehow. Whats the best way to get some free play on the throttle cable end, so you can re-insert it on to the disc and chain mechnism and fit it into the case? Seem to have too few hands at the moment.

Thanx for that! Doesn't have excessive end play when you pull on the throttle tube with the cap is in place.

Something may have been misaligned somehow. I'd like to clean up the teeth on both parts and try to re-install.

Could there be any surface hardening treatment on those pot metal parts?

No hard facing on the teeth.
Get a piece of string or thin wire and lift then tie the throttle arms up to something, anything. That will give you some free play.
You should check each cable for free movement, inner/outer.
I understand not wanting to mess with adjustments.
You being a guitarist, I could teach you a way to set minimum free play by 'playing' the cable inner, at the carb. Take a bit of 'splainin' tho
