Deep Oil Pan

Hi all,

Does anyone have experience installing a deep oil pan on a /7? I have an R80 that I'd like to install one on but I cannot figure out if it will clear my center stand. I have the stand with two cross bars on it (photo attached). Some people online say it fits, and some say the stand needs needs to be changed or modified.

I've got pans like this on my R75/6 and my R100RS and will likely get one for my R100/7 sometime:





They clear the centerstands just fine. Two crossbars on the stands on these bikes.

I put 3 full quarts in and it will show about 1/2 quart low on the dipstick. This is a good thing as there's a wee spot more air volume which makes for maybe a tiny bit less stress on the breathing apparatus.

I think the current version is made by MAC.

You'll need a second pickup gasket. Install the pickup with green Loctite and use hardened washers if you can on the extension where the bolt heads bear on it. On the R75 I had to spot face the extension where a previous mechanic had installed it without washers and it was chewed up a bit.

The simple answer is, if it's a stock BMW pan from a later model, it won't fit or rather it will fit but the rearmost crossover will foul the pan.

You can't 'just fit' a later main stand, the attachments are different and, in any case, you wouldn't want to. The later stand is not good.

Certain aftermarket deep pans are designed to fit but I can't give makes or model numbers... there are a plethora of aftermarket pans, both available now and on the second hand market.

I would also question why you want to change the pan. There really is no need unless you are using the engine for competition reasons or, perhaps, in a very warm climate. Airheads, used as they were intended, do not suffer from oil shortage (as long as you keep them topped up) and overheating is only likely to occur in very hot conditions if the bike is idling or used in intermittent very low running.

My advice would be to review your reasons from fitting a deep pan and, unless you have a real reason, spend your money on something worthwhile.

So this type of pan is a no go?

Absolutely correct... In fact I think that is why, in 1980, BMW moved away from the centre stand they had used from 1969, replacing it with the much weaker and wear prone stand that required a redesign around a year later (which didn't help much) and was completely revamped for the Monoshock models. Smacks of Right Hand ignorance of Left Hand requirements.
