Thanks for the posts guys! This is going to be my over the road hauler so I want to have every thing tight and right. I agree that the time to change the tranny is the minuet I have a replacement. (and an afternoon) Yep, I have the log book started and I'm bugging the former owner ( who's a friend) for the records that came with the bike when he got it."It's around here somewhere" :| I'm hoping if I do tranny fluid changes like mad, maybe every couple tanks of fuel, I can buy myself another season. That being said I would like to put a few thousand on it this year. Maybe 10k? :D

In regards to the fuel flow. The bike sat for the better part of 10 years before I got it so there is some serious chit in the tank. The inside of the tank has a orange coating that I'm thinking is a failed tank seal attempt? Are they orange from the factory? I've used POR 15 with good results in auto tanks before so I've been thinking of doing that. I've received some advise to clean the tank the best I can and just run with some extra filters for what if's. Any thoughts?

Oh and just to open up a can.... what's the best input shaft spline lube?

Orange is original. Have you removed the petcocks yet, to see if any junk comes out with them? Was it stored all that time with old fuel in it?
I've yet to see the need for an external fuel filter. Some folks wouldn't leave home without them. I have the straight Karcoma on mine, and it has two screens - one covering the tubes inside the tank, and one right above the nipple to which the fuel line attaches.

Spline lube? My personal favorite is Honda Moly 60. There are several good moly grease's out there, but the Honda is easy to find. It should be available at a Honda dealership, but call ahead.

One tube should last you your lifetime. Also good on rear wheel splines. Sparingly but thoroughly in both places.

I have seen rust and dirt that was small enough to go through the screens, yet big enough to plug pilot jets. A filter that caught the fine rust, restricted the flow enough to make the last of the gas in the tank not drain.

Some guys over on a Triumph forum use an old clothes drier dedicated to cleaning gas tanks. They put variuos sizes of nuts, bolts and ball bearings in the tank before wrapping it with padding and let'er rip. Gentle cycle?

Yea I have the straight Karcoma to but the screens where torn, removed and in one of the saddle bags when it came to me. I did a gas tank rinse in the fall and threw on some large inline filters in an attempt to get some pre snow miles on. I just shook the tank around and rinsed it out with old gas a few times. The results where a bit alarming. I washed out a half cup on rusty, orange, flaky mess. It did fine the month I rode it but it would be nice to know it's repaired rather than counting on the filters.

Oldsoul,

Filling the tank with vinegar for a week or so will remove the old liner and not damage the outer paint.

This kit is really nice too and you can do it, again, w/o messing up the outer paint too....

Yeah - if the orange liner is flaking off, it is time to re-do it. :(
