Crashed!
Re: Crashed!
Thanks for all the well wishes. Doc says I have a separated shoulder and most likely a cracked or broken rib; six weeks to recovery. I have all the parts to fix the bike in stock. Here's the video, I almost got it stopped in time... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBsSQSE9y-8
Re: Crashed!
Yikes! The video makes me sick to my stomach. You're lucky!
Drove the bike home. These are tough machines.
May you and the bike make a speedy recovery.

Yeah it does look a bit ragged doesn't it. Good thing you stopped short of it Tim and I'm glad you were ok enough to ride it home.Airbear wrote:Tim, that is terrible looking stuff in the background. I'm glad you didn't get smeared all over that lot.
Heal well, mate. Give the old girl a pat from me.

Re: Crashed!
Tim, sorry to hear about the crash. We've all been right at the edge of a crash like yours. In my case, I totally separated my right shoulder in an off highway incident. Six weeks is pretty short for recovery, unless is wasn't fully separated like mine.
Re: Crashed!
If I may, what happened there?
Looking at the video it seems you were just about through the turn and stood it up. Debris in the road?
On a side note, having separated my shoulder 3 times now: Don't do that again!

Glad to see that you did not suffer major injury to yourself and bike. Pretty scary how things can go wrong so quickly. Those lava rocks look nasty and not too forgiving to roll over.
The best in your recovery.

Re: Crashed!
It's hard to tell from the video, but the field of view is 170 degrees. It makes everything look 3 times further away than it actually is. When I came around the turn I could see my line was going to take me into the big rock to the left of where I ended up, so I hit the brakes as hard as I could and aimed between two smaller rocks. In retrospect, I probably could have leaned further and might have made it, or laid the bike down on the asphalt. In the split second when it happened, I also saw the parked truck out of the corner of my eye, and thinking it might be oncoming traffic I chose the path of least resistance... What actually went through my mind was, "SH!T(hit the brakes) so this is what crashing feels like" (crunch) and I was on the ground. The Doc said my shoulder was separated, but not dislocated, so everything is still where it ought to be, but torn. The ribs are what's giving me the most problems; can't sneeze, cough, roll out of bed or blow my nose without sharp pain.lrz wrote:If I may, what happened there?

Re: Crashed!
Yep, not forgiving at all, the mirror and clutch lever are heavily gouged. I hate to think what it would have done to my Levi covered legs. Surprisingly, my jacket is mostly dirty, just scraped along it's bottom edge on the back. My helmet has a few scratches and gouges, the worst on the visor, just to the side of my left eye.jagarra wrote:Those lava rocks look nasty and not too forgiving to roll over.
Re: Crashed!
So glad that you are okay.
I wish you a speedy and full recovery.
From what I can see in your video, based on the indicated speed, the turn and the seemingly decent traction....I think you would have made the turn fine if you had stayed in that turn and leaned more.
Thanks for sharing.
