R90S final drive re-seal needed

Post by craydds »

Please recommend a good BMW mechanic for me. My 1975 R90S final drive needs a re-seal job; a chore I do not want to do. THANK YOU!

Hmmmm. I would have recommended Hansen's BMW, the dealer local to me in Southern Oregon. Very Airhead friendly and knowledgeable and I'm about to engage them to do the same thing. They also do spline repairs if you need that.

They do work by mail if that's fine for you.
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.

Cray:

I'm in the midst of that very job. The reason I'm tackling it is that none of the dealers or shops around here (Southern CO) want to do it. If all you need to do is replace the seal on both sides of the axle the there is an excellent video on Boxer two valve. You just need a heat gun and some bearing drivers and a rubber! (not steel) mallet. Oh and a couple of 5mm x 15mm long cap screws to push the drive apart once you have it out.

If you need to replace the seal between the rear drive and the swing arm, then special tools are needed.

This video is for 85 and later but it is really helpful. William's enthusiasm is infectious.

There may be a video for the earlier models. I could not find it though.

Good luck!
